pengertian dan penggunaan neither... nor.. dan either... or...

Neither / Either

1. Neither memiliki arti ‘not one and not the other’ tidak (hal) ini dan tidak pula (hal) itu. Dalam kalimat yang menggunakan neither maka verb yang digunakan adalah affirmative singular verb. Neither dapat digunakan sendiri atau diikuti oleh of + the/these/those/possessives atau personal pronoun. Contohnya lihat di bawah ini..

1. I tried both keys but neither (of them) worked. (saya telah mencoba kedua kunci ini tapi tidak ada (dari keduanya) yang berfungsi)
2. Neither of them knew the way.
3. I have read neither of these (books).

1. Either memiliki arti ‘any one of two’ satu dari dua orang/benda, either juga menggunakan singular verb dan dapat ditempatkan sendiri atau pun diikuti oleh noun/pronoun atau diikuti oleh of + the/these/those.
2. Jika either digunakan dengan negative verb maka makna nya akan sama dengan neither + affirmative verb. Kecuali jika neither ditempatkan sebagai subject dari sebuah verb. Sehingga either tidak bisa digunakan untuk mengganti neither seperti pada contoh a)  dan b) (lihat contoh di nomor 1), tapi bisa untuk contoh c).
   I have read neither of these (books).
   I haven’t read either of these (books).
   Meskipun either tidak dapat menjadi subject untuk negative verb, tetapi either bisa menjadi subject untuk affirmative dan interrogative verb.
   Either of these would do.
   Would you like either of these?
    
   
3. Neither… nor dan either… or
   Neither… nor… digunakan untuk menggabungkan dua negative

1. Neither my brother nor my sister allowed me to join the competition.
2. He said the room was clean and fragrant but it was neither clean nor fragrant.
3. They neither come nor call.

Either… or…. + negative verb dalam kalimat berfungsi sama dengan neither… nor…. Kecuali, jika neither… nor… adalah subject dari verb, seperti pada contoh a), sehingga:

b). … but it wasn’t either clean or fragrant.

c). They didn’t either come or call.

Either… or… tidak bisa menjadi subject untuk negative verb, tetapi bisa menjadi subject untuk affirmative dan interrogative verbs.

She can do either dance or sing. (tidak keduanya)

You shall either study or read.

Can I have either coffee or tea?
