The (the definite article)

1. Bentuk ‘the’ (form)
   The digunakan untuk singular dan plural, dan untuk seluruh gender, contohnya:
   Singular: the boy, the girl, the day.
   Plural: the boys, the girls, the days
2. Penggunaan ‘the’ (use)
   Article’ the’ digunakan untuk:

1. Digunakan ketika objek atau sekelompok objek unik atau dikategorikan unik, contohnya:
   The earth, the sea, the sky, the equator, the stars.
2. Sebelum kata benda yang disebutkan kedua kalinya dalam sebuah kalimat, contohnya:
   His car struck a tree; you still can see the mark on the tree.
3. Sebelum kata benda yang menunjukan hanya satu benda tertentu. Artinya, saat pembicara mengatakan benda ini maka pendengar sudah tahu benda mana yang dimaksud, contohnya:
   Daniel is in the garage. (garasi yang ada di rumah yang ditempati)
   Give me the apple. (apel yang ada di atas piring)
   Contoh lainnya: the police (polisi yang sedang berdiri di depan kita), the rabbit (kelinci peliharaan kita), the phone (ponsel yang sedang kita pegang)
4. Sebelum kata benda yang dibentuk dengan penambahan phrase atau clause, contohnya:
   The woman in black
   The girl that you see
   The boy with red hat
   The class where I teach
5. Sebelum superlative, contohnya:
   The best day, the most beautiful girl
6. Sebelum first, second, third, dan lain lain. Serta sebelum only, contohnya:
   The first, the second, the third, the fourth, the fifth, the only way

1. Penempatan the + singular noun (kata benda tunggal) dapat menunjukan kelompok dari binatang atau benda (class of animals or things), contohnya:
   The tiger has become quite extinct.
   The government is facing a big issue.
   Kecuali untuk kata man, yang digunakan untuk menunjukan human race tidak perlu ditambah artikel, contohnya:
   If oil supplies run out, man may have to fall back on the horse.
2. The digunakan sebelum nama nama laut, sungai, kelompok pulau pulau, pegunungan, nama nama Negara, padang pasir, contohnya:
   The atlantic, the thames, the azores, the alps, the Netherlands, the sahara, the crimea, the Riviera
3. The digunakan sebelum nama nama tempat tertentu (certain other names), contohnya:
   The City, the Mall, the Sudan
4. The digunakan sebelum nama nama yang terdiri dari noun + of + noun, contohnya:
   The cape of good hope
   The capital of Indonesia
   The gulf of mexico
5. The digunakan sebelum east/west/north/etc. contohnya:
   The north pole
   The west indies
6. Digunakan dengan nama nama yang memiliki penggunaan yang terbatas. The ditambah nama belakang misal Humphries berarti menunjukan keluarga Humphries.
   Contohnya:
   The Humphries : Mr and Mrs Humphries (and children)
